How to Make a Sleeping Bag with Drawstring Carrying Bag for an 18" Doll

You will need for the sleeping bag:

  1. 1 yard of 60” wide fleece fabric
  2. 2 – 3 handfuls of polyester fiberfill

Cutting Instructions:

  1. Cut one rectangle measuring 30” long X 15” wide. This is the sleeping bag back and built-in pillow.
  2. Cut one rectangle measuring 16” long X 15” wide. This is the sleeping bag front.

Sewing Instructions:

1. With WRONG side of fabric facing you, fold over the top edge of the two sleeping bag pieces 1/2”. Pin in place and then stitch, close to the pinned edge.

2. Still with WRONG side of fabric facing you, fold over the top edge of the sleeping bag back 6 1/2” and pin along the sides. This will form the built-in pillow.
3. Place the front on top of the back as shown, with RIGHT sides together and matching up the bottom edges. Pin in place. Stitch along the sides and bottom, stitching in a ½” seam. Clip bottom corners.
4. Turn the sleeping bag RIGHT side out. You will notice that the edges of the sleeping bag back that are a single layer automatically turn back 1/2” (1.3cm) when the bag is turned right side out. Stitch these edges in place, stitching close to the cut edges. Pin around the top and sides of the pillow as shown. Top stitch 1/2” around the edges of the pillow.
5. Stuff the pillow with fiberfill, being sure to distribute the fiberfill evenly. Stitch the pillow closed, stitching on top of the opening’s hem stitch.
Finished Sleeping Bag

You will need for the drawstring bag:

  1. 1/2 Yard of 45” wide fabric
  2. 1 Yard of 5/8” wide ribbon

Cutting Instructions:

  1. Cut one rectangle of fabric measuring 13” long X 20” wide.

Sewing Instructions:

1. With RIGHT sides together, fold the rectangle in half widthwise, so that the folded piece measures 13” long by 10” wide. Stitch the bottom and right-hand edges together in a 1/2” seam, leaving the top open to form the bag.

2. Turn down the upper edge 1/4” and press in place. Turn it down again 1” and press in place. This will form the casing for the drawstring. Stitch close to the first folded edge. Open the seam at the end of the casing on the inside to allow the ribbon to be inserted into the casing.240
3. Turn the bag RIGHT side out. Insert the ribbon through the casing until it emerges from the other end of the casing opening. Pull the ends until they are even and knot together.
