Simplicity 1198, view E
It’s over for another year (hopefully it will be back!). The finale was a surprise, firstly the garments Matt, Neil and Lorna had to tackle were extremely challenging, and not something that most sewists would encounter! But, as we’ve come to expect they rose to the challenge! Fortunately, Simplicity, New Look and Burda do have top patterns similar to the asymmetrical top they made – without the hassle of trying to work out how it is constructed as of course, all the step by step construction notes are provided with clear illustrations! Take a look at Simplicity 1198, (sizes xxs – xxl) view E, it is an easy to sew pack of tops, some with lace inserts for knit fabrics which includes sleeve variations, optional contrast yoke and panel with asymmetric hemlines. The scoop neck knit top has sleeve options and a beautifully draped hemline.
New Look 6109 is a simple top with asymmetrical hem
Another good option is New Look 6109, sizes 8-18. View A has the lovely asymmetrical hemline. Also included in the pack is a pair of pull on trousers – comfort assured.
Burda 7340 is my third top option
My Burda choice is 7340, an easy design in sizes 10-22. View B is a hip-length shirt with side slit and angled hem edge. The final dress was Neil’s downfall – which as a real shame as he had consistently been such a good sewist throughout the series and actually, whilst not perfectly executed, it was a very wearable dress. I loved Lorna’s extravagant style and again, it was a style you could wear for special occasions. If you want to find a pattern that has similar design details, take a look at Simplicity 1656 by Jessica McClintock, it has the mini dress underneath a floating highlow over skirt with waterfall front.
Other alternatives include Burda 7011, sizes 6-16 – View C of which has a high low hemline and fitted
A lovely boned dress with highlow hemline
Burda 6866 is an elegent variation for Lorna's double dress
Burda 6866 is another contender, sizes 10-22. It has a high low hemmed over dress to wear over a long line evening dress - so the opposite to Lorna’s design, but equally stunning.
Simplicity 5006 - as made by the GBSB contestants - the ultimate corset
And of course, Matt’s corset with eyelets and lacing can be made from Simplicity 5006, my favourite corset pattern in the range (and there are plenty). So another year over, but with lots to inspire. Enjoy..
